Born in a log cabin on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky, Allen Hui would have been the 16th President of the United States if that had been true. Instead, he was born in 1976 at a hospital in Oakland, California. With emancipation proclaimed, Gettysburg addressed and slavery abolished in the United States over a century before his birth, Allen was free to pursue his interest in science and art.
In 1994, Allen began his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), majoring in Physics just so he could sound smart at parties. As an undergraduate researcher, Allen assisted in the design, assembly and testing of particle detectors that were used in several particle physics experiments, including components installed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, Allen entered the private sector and worked as a web designer and developer for several internet companies and design studiosmost notably, a 15-month stint luxuriating in a Herman Miller Aeron Chair as the lead Content Producer at eHobbies.com.
Along with several collegues, Allen co-founded and launched SpinnerRack.coma comic book and pop culture websiteand in 2002, he joined Image Comics as its Web Developer. During his tenure at Image, Allen would become a Production Artist and eventually the Production Manager, allowing him to expand his design and management skill set, gain valuable knowledge of the print publishing industry and be part of a nurturing creative community full of artists, writers and people at conventions who choose to dress as Imperial Stormtroopers.
Today, Allen lives in the San Francisco Bay Area working as a graphic designer. In his free time, he owns and operates an independent publishing company, Submarine Press, that he founded in 2008 with goal of publishing new and unique talent. He has also reinvented himself as a semi-professional writer and cartoonist, fulfilling his life-long dream of being mildly interesting.
Allen Hui is currently working at VIZ Media as a Marketing & Production Associate in arguably the coolest office space in San Francisco.
